Snow in July at Mammoth Mountain

Towering at 11,053 feet above sea level, aptly-named Mammoth Mountain‘s summit is the highest in the state of California. With a 2017 season snowfall of 514 inches, it is not uncommon for the ski resort to stay in working condition up until late July or early August.

Warm temperatures, sunshine, and seeing the snow-covered mountain from our room was a view I was not expecting to enjoy in the middle of July. We enjoyed the area so much we changed our plans (from a one-night stay) to include three nights at the Mammoth Mountain Inn.

Unfortunately, there weren’t any beginner slopes open so I didn’t get to ski. Instead, I hung out in the Mountainside Bar & Grill; its 2-story panoramic windows provided a great spot to watch the skiers and snowboarders on the slopes while sipping on a glass of Merlot.

One of my favorite activities was the scenic gondola ride and playing in the snow on top of the summit.

The sun was so warm that I could wear shorts!

The neighboring Yodler Restaurant and Bar is famous for its authentic Bavarian food, the perfect place to experience the European aprés ski. I couldn’t say no to this beautiful soft pretzel.

Exploring the Mammoth Lakes was a treat as well. There are a ton of walking and mountain biking trails surrounding the area with stunning views of the Sierras around every bend.

And it wouldn’t be a trip to Mammoth without a visit to town. You can find the above ski humor hanging in 53 Kitchen & Cocktails (go for dinner, stay for the cocktails and live music)!
